Artie and Dancing with Myself. Mercedes with Hate on Me. Quinn and No Air. Kurt and Defying Gravity. Yeah there's some that are just for fun/single sales if you will - the mash-up episode. But typically I think the songs are used to illuminate the characters. Kind of like how they use the songs that play over the credits of Mad Men episodes.
