This Week in Movies – 5/4/09

You've got red on you

In Theaters:

  • Star Trek – Origin story directed by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Alias, MI:3). Sylar is Spock, Shaun of the Dead is Scotty, Harold is Sulu, and some pretty boy is Captain Kirk. Even if you don’t like Star Trek, J.J. knows how to make an entertaining movie.

  • Next Day Air –  I have never heard of this movie, but after watching the trailer, it may be worth a rent at the very least. Turk and Mos Def are delivery guys. Turk delivers a package of cocaine mistakenly to Mike Epps and Avon Barksdale. Here come the shenanigans.

On Video:

Video of Note that Came Out Since the Last Time I did One of These:

  • The Wrestler – Mickey Rourke is a washed up wrestler risking everything on a comeback. Marisa Tomei is his stripper love interest. Supposed to be good. Nominated for Oscars and all that.

  • Frost/Nixon – Another Oscar contender. This one about the reporter who interviewed Nixon post impeachment.

  • Yes Man – Jim Carrey can’t say no. They say he’s back to Liar Liar form in this one.

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still – Keanu Reeves is an emotionless alien. He also plays one in this movie . . . I’m here all night folks! Seriously though, I thought this one was worth a rent at least.

  • Doubt – Lots of Oscar attention for the actors in this one. Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman are nuns and a priest respectively. Scandal ensues.

  • Slumdog Millionaire – I don’t know if it deserved the Oscar or all the hype and fanfare from Hollywood, but it’s definitely worth a watch.

  • Seven Pounds – Will Smith is on a personal mission. Any more will spoil it for you. I liked it, but a lot of people didn’t. Some say it was too manipulative and sappy. I disagree, but it did have its faults.
