This Week in Movies – 10/7/08

In Theaters:

  • Body of Lies – Ridley Scott directs Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in a spy thriller. Should be pretty thrilling.
  • City of Ember – An underground city ruled by Bill Murray is in danger. Looks about as strange and intriguing as Bill Murray.
  • The Express – Another uplifting football movie. This one about the first black man to win the Heisman.
  • Quarantine – I honestly thought this movie had already flopped in theaters and was coming out on video. The TV trailers make it look like a pay-per-view movie. Draw your own conclusions from that.

On Video:

  • You Don’t Mess With the Zohan – Adam Sandler hasn’t made a great comedy since Happy Gilmore. This one’s probably about as decent as all the rest.
  • The Happening – M. Night Shama-lama’s latest. I think he climaxed with Unbreakable, so that would probably make this his denouement.
  • The Visitor – A professor comes home to find strangers living in his home. This one actually looked pretty good. It’s by the guy that did The Station Agent. Add it to the queue. Actually, add them both to the queue, and if anyone knows where I might have left my copy of The Station Agent, please let me know.
  • Paranoid Park – High School crime drama done by the director of Good Will Hunting. Could be good. I’ll check it out and let you know.

Favorite Video Friday – Strange Celebrity Cameos

This Week: Weird Cameos

Earl Scruggs and Friends – Foggy Mountain Breakdown

First of all, what is Steve Martin even doing in this video and second of all, why did they stick him in a corner wearing a sweatshirt?

Elton John – This Train Don’t Stop Here Anymore

I don’t know what’s weirder, Justin Timberlake playing Elton John, or the real Elton John.

Greg Laswell – How the Day Sounds

I don’t know why Frodo’s in this video, but I like it.

Apologies

I need to apologize to my small but powerful group of regular followers for the recent lack of posts. I was up in Salt Lake City shooting a short for my grad school application and was far too busy for my silly blog. The short is basically a series of the same “guy meets girl” story done in the style of three different genres, each more ridiculous than the one before: Action, Western, and Musical. I’ll be posting samples as soon as I have them on this site, but in the meantime, Steven, who did the music for the musical, posted his awesome songs on his myspace (first 3 songs). Check them out for a little taste.

As far as movies for this week go, have no fear, the only thing coming out worth seeing in wide release this week is Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist. If you have access to limited release, Rachel Getting Married could be good, and RocknRolla looks pretty sweet. Oh, and you better go buy Iron Man on DVD.

This Week in Movies – 9/22/08

In Theaters:

  • Choke – Sam Rockwell in a movie based on a book by the author of Fight Club about a con-man who fakes choking in fancy restaurants. You can bet it’s going to be crude and violent. If it’s you’re type of thing, you already know about it.
  • Eagle Eye – Shia LeBeouf has a guardian angel … or does he? Either way, looks like fun.
  • Miracle at St. Anna – Spike Lee’s latest joint about an all black unit in WWII that gets trapped behind enemy lines. I don’t know much about it, except that Spike doesn’t like Clint Eastwood.
  • Nights in Rodanthe – The latest Nicholas Sparks novel to be adapted to the big screen. I’ll be avoiding it like the plague, I suggest you do the same.

On Video:

  • Sex and the City – You may have heard of this one.
  • Leatherheads – It was fun, but could’ve been a lot better.
  • Run Fatboy, Run – Simon Pegg is fat, so he signs up for a marathon to win back his ex. I’ll watch just about anything with Pegg in it.
  • Deception – Ewan McGregor does naughty things and gets in trouble. Not interested.
  • Foot Fist Way – It comes highly recommended by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, so you know I’m watching it.

Favorite Video Friday – Picture Pages

This one’s for Megan.

This Week: Photographs

CSS – Move

I want that van.

Sia – Breathe Me

Stop-Motion never gets old.

The Raconteurs – Salute Your Solution

If Jack White and Dave Grohl somehow mated and had a baby, it would be the Messiah of Rock.
