I think the Fall movie season might be starting. Finally, some decent movies!
In Theaters:
Burn After Reading - Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, and Tilda Swinton all mixed together by the Coen Brothers. Need I say more?
Righteous Kill - Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino team up again in a cop thriller. Neither of them have done much lately, but this one actually looks decent. I’ll probably catch it on video.
Tyler Perry’s The Family that Preys - See what he did there? I’ve never seen a Tyler Perry movie and I’m not going to see this one, but if you liked the others, you’ll probably like this one and it’s sure to make a mint. I just don’t get it.
The Women - Something something, old ladies, something something, cheating spouses, something something, I couldn’t care less.
I almost just brushed this week aside, but with the recent props from Mooney, the pressure was on. I decided to go back to the music video roots, or at least the roots of my favorite music video director, Spike Jonze. While he hasn’t featured skateboarding in any of his videos that I’m aware of (except his first, Sonic Youth’s 100%, but I’m not much of a Sonic Youth fan), he started out making skate videos and skate videos are still at the heart of guerrilla filmmaking, which should be at the heart of any good music video. You’ll see kids with cameras at just about any skate park today, and that’s all thanks to people like Spike Jonze and amazing videos like Yeah Right (I recommend it if you have a spare 72 min).
This week: Skateboarding
Lupe Fiasco - Kick Push
This video’s pretty literal.
Coconut Records - West Coast
I know absolutely nothing about these guys, but I kind of dig their style.
Oddly, this video reminds me of The California Raisins.
She & Him - Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?
Zooey Deschanel will forever haunt my dreams.
Kanye West - Flashing Lights
Megan and I listened to this song all the time in New York… luckily, we don’t own a shovel or that might frighten me. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it again. Spike Jonze is a genius.
Speed Racer - Say what you will about the Wachowski Brothers, they know how to make a visually pleasing movie. I might be excited about this if I had watched the cartoon as a child. Kids should like it. I think I’ll wait for DVD.
What Happens in Vegas - Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher. If you watch this movie, I will personally come to your house, beat you unconscious, and steal your wallet, because you are obviously too stupid to manage your own money. I had some friends that PA’d for this movie. They wish they hadn’t. That’s saying something.
The Fall (Limited Release) - A trippy Independent flick brought to the US by Spike Jonze and David Fincher. Find a theater that’s playing it and watch this movie!
Surfwise (Limited Release) - A documentary about a Doctor that quit his job and took his family off the grid to teach strict moral codes while driving from surf spot to surf spot. Looks interesting
On Video Tuesday:
I’m Not There - Bob Dylan portrayed by various actors/actress (Cate Blanchett) in one movie. Sadly, this is the only thing worth your time this week.
